Martinez Cabin

Difficulty: 2.5

Distance: 28.8 miles

Time: 3h 15 mins

Description:

A memorable drive through stark rocky canyons and gorgeous Sonoran Desert. Ends at spectacular Martinez Canyon, an historic mining area. Views of the Superstition Mountains and Weaver’s Needle can be seen from high points along the route. Enjoy Martinez Cabin in the cool shade of giant cottonwoods at the end of the drive. Hike a half-mile to well-preserved Martinez Mine. Most of the trail is easy except one moderate spot. A stock Suzuki Sidekick in our group had no problems. Some light brush rubs against vehicles near the end of the trail. Route-finding is complex so follow directions carefully. This is a remote and rugged area so carry plenty of water and be self-sufficient. Much of the trail follows wash bottoms where flash flooding is possible.

Initially, this short trail travels along an easy, smooth road that undulates through the craggy peaks of the region. There are fantastic views as the trail crests a saddle and starts to drop down toward Martinez Canyon.  After 2 miles, Central #43 Coke Ovens trail leads off to the right. The main trail runs alongside Martinez Wash before dropping down farther to enter the red walls of Martinez Canyon. The trail in the canyon is narrow and lumpy, with several tight corners and boulders to negotiate, but the standard is moderate throughout.

The remains of the old Martinez Mine are under several cottonwoods, which provide shade for a pleasant break. There is a timber cabin, build in 1947, and a white painted rock and adobe casita. The area is private, but access is currently permitted.

The trail ends here for most vehicles, but it is possible to drive or hike farther up the wash to view the remains of Martinez Mill. The drive is difficult and body damage can be expected. It is approximately .4 miles from the mine cabins to the mill site, a rewarding hike through the spectacular canyon.
